My younger brother is a senior in high school. He goes to a vo-tec school and studies auto tech. The school does an alternating week schedule meaning one week of academics; one week of work, then back to academics again. He has been working at a local shop for a few months now and has been restoring a 1957 Chevy 4 door wagon with my dad for the last couple years and is almost done. I have him all figured out for xmas, but I am trying to think of another inexpensive gift (around $30 or so) that would be good for a mechanic in training (other than tools, got that part taken care of). He will be going to a tech school next year to further his education in the automotive field. Any ideas? Throw 'em out, I appreciate it!

l.e.d. flash light.
25-30 bucks and you can find some pretty decent one that pushes out a lot of light.

I use the hell out of mine, never have it off of me at work lol:)
A few other things that aren't really car tools but are extremely useful are:
1. A small step stool, helps when working on larger trucks, I used mine a lot when I worked at GM, I'm only 5'7 though :-\
2. One of those lil' heat guns for heat shrink wire connectors. I got one b/c I kept lighting them on fire.
3. A PSP since everywhere seems to be slow as hell right now.
I'll post more up if I think of them.

Parking Lot Trackstar...

A very realistic Die Cast of his favorite car. 1/18 or something.
Aside from the the LED flashlight thing is bad ass. I got the innova X5 like 6 years ago and have used the shit out of it, also Ive never changed the batts.
$39.99 tho.
Worth every penny.

gloves, flashlights....the "op"er is looking for gift idea for a budding mechanic not some gay blind guy that "tinkers" under the hood of a car and hates getting dirty. You said he is going off to school to further his automotive education? Then why not get him a gift card to wal-mart that has a like 100 bucks on it, because if he is going to be living bby himself, or with a roommate then he is going to need it. Believe me, I am going to school for the same thing and I never have money to go to walmart and because of that I never have food in my fridge.

What vocational school is it?
The Voc school I went to did the exact same thing with 1 week shop, 1 week academics.
One of those little magnetic pans for nuts and bolts might be a good idea.
