Driving impressions of a v6 swap

Driving impressions of a v6 swap

The addition of this motor to the already good handling spec
Makes for a magnificent grand touring car
Able to click off 550 mile day trips and leave you in the mood, when you get home.
Once at highway speeds
It’s smooth as a new made bed
And quiet
No real resonance or shakes
Endless acceleration
Effortless passing w/o any downshifts
Able to flick back and forth past the 18 wheelpersons
So effortlessly you lose track of how fast you are going and how hard it is accelerating

I was taking it easy getting used to a new car happy and euphoric to be driving at sunrise
In such a secure car
With out really being aware, my speed had crept up to almost 120 and you really couldn’t tell
Push the go button and it would push you back in the seat even at that speed

Torque forever [from 1600rpm-up]

I thought it was very peppy between 3-4 thousand on the tach
Until I realized that peppy maybe ought to be in capital letters or a very big font
It would blow off mustang gt’s so easily that at first I thought they weren’t trying
[ after honking their horn several times they appeared to try but they disappear in the rear view mirror so fast I couldn’t tell]
That was in 6th

The exhaust note tells you exactly what you are doing
Be gentle on the gas and it is such a mellow hum
It honestly sounds better than my 5.0l[fords] of the past [you have all heard the mustangs]
Very deep [not tinny]
Hit it and it barks

In Atlanta traffic, it was a needle pulling thread
Leave it in 5th and sew those lanes together
Zip ,zip

So what’s the down side
It idles fine in traffic with out over heating
It did not stall once the entire trip
It averaged 23-24 mpg with all my craziness
Hmm! this part is going to be hard
Ah! It only gets about 260 miles on a tank of gas

Just like it did before

Its no wolf in sheep’s clothing
It’s a lion
Barry

Re: Driving impressions of a v6 swap

I'm happy for you too man.

I love the spec as well, i just wish it was a bit faster. I never did buy this car for straight line speed anyway but more power is nice. smiley-laugh

Re: Driving impressions of a v6 swap

Who needs Sport Compact Car, anyway.. ?! smiley-smile

That about sums it up, Barry.. and it's the main reason that so many people want this swap.  If you're given the chance to drive a VQ swapped Spec.. you will be instantly hooked.  And, another 40-50hp with heads/cams/tuning only makes it better..

Good deal.. Sounds like she has a clean bill of health.  I was a little worried with the bumpy start that we had.. but, with rings sealed up, and noises gone.. it seems like she's good to go.

When are you going to hit the drag strip?  This car would be absolutely silly with some wide rims and sticky rubber all the way around.  We need to get that set up for the road race event at the SERCA meet next year.  I'm going to bring my Lightning.. smiley-smile
