Nerbsickle WannaBe

OK, well some of you know that I am currently looking at boosting the automatic. The RIGHT way. Now everyone knows that the transmission just cannot handle the power of a boosted QR. But Hey.... If this is the same transmission in the 02-03 Altima 3.5, why cant it handle 290whp? Or atleast 250whp.
Heres why:
In NA engine the powerband is more stable then a boosted car. When a automatic transmission shifts you typicly dont take your foot off the gas pedal. Now on a N/A car this isnt an issue, W/O having alot of power. Anyone who has driven in a boosted QR, or any boosted car, Knows that the car pulls..... Hard. Everytime you shift in a manual you pull your foot off the gas (or atleast not 100% throttle) Thus you are dumping your boost through the blowoff valve. (look in Gen FI for what this does) Thus you take thrust off the transmission, shift, and then punch it again.
In an Auto, you keep your foot planted through out, in which case you are NOT dumping your boost. So you 'in effect' have 300whp slamming on the components of the transmission every shift. No N/A purposed transmission can handle this.
But why dont you just pull your foot off the gas when the car is about to shift? You can, but anyone who drives a auto knows that unless youve got 100% throttle, your not gonna be shifting at max, it will shift early, and also you cannot pull your foot off quick enough
So how do we fix this? Through a mess of componants all put together to enable a automatic to 'plausibly' be able to handle 300whp, with minimal cash to do the job. Not the 5k some have been quoted.
1: Transgo Reprogramming Shift Kit $150-$170
Best thing to start with is this mod. Now FEW have put this on thier B15, but I havent found someone with a SER transmission put this on the car. I hope to be the first.... Hopefully. Now this isnt just a simple easy mod, it is a indepth mod that can have VERY disasterous results. I mean totally screwing your transmission up. The kit upgrades most f the stock componants that take the wear and tear on the transmission. You either have to try it yourself, or have a transmission shop install it for around $400 on top of the 150 for the parts.
2: Drop Resisitor Mod $0.00
Now I know that MANY people are scepticle of doing this mod, but the case is, its the ONLY way to safely turbo a automatic. Heres why, when you do the mod the car shifts at 100% line pressure, meaning quicker shifts and less pressure on the transmission componants. When boosting this has been the #1 problem, the transmission likes to 'granny' shift, keeping the Rpm's dropping slowly. Now imagine 300whp of force pushing on componants that are built to handle half of that power........ not gonna work. But this mod is Nothing without the shift kit and the upgraded parts.
3: Transmission Cooler $30.00 +
Everyone knows this is gonna be needed in order to put this much power through the transmission. Its a easy cheap install and will work wonders.
Now there are MANY other parts that need upgrading, but not unless your pushing much more power, and/or tracking and launching the car quickly.
Now Gurov and myself have been doing a little bit of working with the FSM to find a way to allow the boost to dump without taking your foot off the gas during a shift. We think we have found a way, and in connection with the Megasquirt system and the drop resistor mod we think the transmission may finally be able to handle the power.
I am also getting a transmission temp sensor to monitor the temps and some other parts to allow this to work.
Now most also know that Gurov's SER is gonna be getting Boost soon. His car will seem to be the guinei pig for the megasquirt system and I will hopefully be able to install the transmission cooler, sensor, and shift kit in by the end of the year and if gurov isnt finished with his car his should be getting similar mods soon after. Ill let gurov update what hes working on. I will be going boost by the middle of next year.
This is gonna be the year for the automatic transmission finally showing that the transmission will be able to hold the power, and be able to run with the big dogs safely. With all this said, Its not a wise idea for anyone to go boost without having all of these mods. All of these mods work together to enable the car to be able to hold the power. Without the megasquirt system, the drop resistor, the shift kit, and the cooler the transmission just cannont handle it. No matter the boost, its just not made to bang all that power at once.
Me and G will be keeping this thread updated, but I will be closing it. Talk about it in another thread, this is for updates only.
