So I bought some wheels from Tirerack and they just arrived. Goody gumdrops. So I open them up and am like wtf wait a sec. They're 8.5" width instead of 7" which is the stock wheel. So I'm thinking to myself, why would Tire rack recommend the same tire size on their website when this wheel is obviously much wider? What gives? I just had to call the Discount Tire guys (who I ordered wheels from this morning) to tell them to change my tires and they were said the wheels might rub.
Halp!

are the wheels 17x8.5 or you just measured them at 8.5 inches wide. The stock wheels actually measure a tad over 8" wide if I recall, but are still considered 17x7's.

i have 18x8's and i have no clearance problems.

link the exact wheels you got. knowing the sizing and offset will help determine how much clearance you have. A lot of people have 8.5 inch wide wheels on the specs with no issues.

The stamp on the inside of the wheel says 17x8.5"JJ. The guy at Discount Tires said there's no way a 225/45/17 will fit on this rim, even though that's the recommended size on TireRacks website. I'm confused

odd that it recommends that size. you can probably stretch that tire over, but I'd suggest going with a wider tire. with a 40mm offset you should have enough clearance to run 235's, and maybe 245's

I have a feeling Mr. Discount tire had no idea what he's talking about. He said, "we can try a 225/40/17, that might fit. WTF does the aspect ratio have to do with it?

Renaissance is running 19x8.5, 40mm offset, with 225/35/19's on his wheels. They don't even look all that stretched. If he can fit them with a 35 sidewall, you can fit 225's with a 45 sidewall for sure.

lol, a 40 is just going to give less sidewall to work with on getting the tire to stretch. I'm not a tire expert, but going to 225/40 would be a terrible idea.

Fuck, looks like I'm goign to have to get up at the crack of dawn to drag one of these up there so they can see it before they order the tires. Numbnuts....

Measure the width of your wheel and get an actual width. I'll do the same on my 17x7's with 225's. I can tell there is quite a bit of room on my tires to stretch them over a wider wheel.
edit: My wheels are about 8 1/8 inches wide.

If I measure the entire rim across it's like 9". the 8.5" is 'inside' measurement. I just went outside and test fit the bare rim to the car and WOW it's super duper close to hitting the shock. GREAT.

it looks to me like the only option for the 57S rims was only 17x8.5". were you under the impression you were getting a different rim size altogether? I'd at least go for a 235

Odd as I have a friend with a 2.0 B16 and runs a 17 x 9 with 225/45/17. They are streched but fit and hes been driving with them for about 6months no problems.
and I run 235/45/17 on my STK rims and I have the Eibach Sportlines and I only splash guard rub doing full U-turns with the wheel cranked all the way. Other then that I have No issues.

Ok, quickie update. They ended up ordering 245/40/17 tires, so we'll see how they fit. Hopefully no rubby dubby. Putting them on tomorrow. Will post pics!
