ok so ive been doing some research i now know why we need precats and all that. my question is why are the precats made of such a fragile material like ceramic. what if your car bottomed out etc would it break apart and get sucked into the engine. this is my first nissan so i dont know much about the precat failures of nissans in the past. what exactly was the main issue that led to the precat failures. if i remove my precats now my warranty is void, so im def going to remove them after. what are the benefits of removing them besides piece of mind. what material are ours? thanks for any help

The premise behind having a precat that close to the engine is that it'll heat up and light off faster, and thus start cleaning the exhaust faster. Why ceramic? I'm not sure but there's probably a reason...it's heat resistant and won't react with the catalyst is my guess.
The 02-06 QRs had an issue wherein (probably helped by the QR's rich tune and driving style of SE-R owners) the precat substrate would break apart in the manifold and, during the intake stroke valve overlap, be sucked backwards into the engine. The ceramic and metal would then scratch up the cylinder walls, leading to reduced compression/power and oil burning.
Do the 07+ QRs have this issue? I don't know. I think there've been some isolated incidents already. Until valve overlap is replaced by a traditional EGR system I'm not going to be convinced.
You can remove your precats either by gutting them out of the stock manifold or replacing them with a header. Doing so will NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

wow thank you armadnigeneral great reply i always thought that it would void my warranty so im def going to remove the precats now. do you get any gains from doing this? and im aslo reading that its against the law to remove your precats is that true?
