This is a how-to thread on gutting the pre-cats on the b16. This is an option for those that would like to not run the risk of having them in the stock header.
Honestly, this was a bit of a pain. The final product is cool. Sounds different... especially higher in the powerband.
I would like to thank Yon (Fenderscratch) and Pat (636specman) for being absolutely awesome with this project.
The pictures are coming and will be edited into this first post.
Obviously, the exhaust is going to be a tad hot... so, make sure the car has cooled off.
This is the order we did things in:
before
removing the splash guard to get to the belt tensioner to remove the alternator.
doing something
disconnecting alternator and removing it
the heat shield that we broke every bolt off except two. we also cut it up to fuck because greg didnt want to put it back on.

what it looks like without the shield

bottom bolts for the manifold
what it looks like with no manifold
ugly fucking waste of engineering dollars
this is the ghey noise that we are getting rid of
this is the amount of shit that came out after cleverly utilizing a bunch of random tools to knock the kitties out
greg checking to be sure all the remnants were removed
after we cleaned it up a little to be sure we got all the dust out.
big ass mess in my driveway
done its back on. refuel.

this is all the work greg did all day
this is why i can express my disapproval of the b16.

Unplug your battery and all of the clips on the o2 sensors.
Remove your front right wheel and the wheel well cover so you can access the pulley.
Remove the alternator. Start removing the bolts on the heat shield. A note about these bolts... they fucking suck. They will break. Don't worry about it... you're not putting it back on anyhow.
After the heat shield is off, you can access the header bolts. Remove those and the bolts that attach the header to the exhaust under the car.
The header should be able to be maneuvered out of the engine bay.
Now the fun part!!!
Remove the rest of the heat shield on the lower part of the header.
We used a combination of things to get the pre-kitties out... Hammer, flat-head screwdriver, wrench, some random piece of metal that Pat found in his garage...
We started with the flat-head. Use it as a chisel. Make sure you knock out EVERY piece of the pre-cat. Remember, you're trying to avoid pieces going into the motor. Get everything out of there. Use a combination of chiseling and hitting the side of the header with the hammer.
We rinsed out the header with water... not a lot. Just enough to make sure no debris remained.
After it thoroughly dried out, we reattached everything. Yours truly managed to not bolt the header to the exhaust originally... It sounded kind of cool (lol) but, make sure everything is tidied back up.
The car is not currently throwing any check engine light.
(more will be added later)

What do you feel as response wise, it has to be a tad quicker up top. I'm kind of excited to do this.

It did respond a bit quicker. I wasn't really paying attention much since I was half-asleep on the way home lol.
I have some free time today. I'll play with it some more.

Have you done anything to possibly prevent any check engine lights? (o2 spacers?)

Offline

Greg

^^ I forgot to mention that!!
No o2 spacers. No check engine light. The three of us were shocked.

It could take some driving for it to come on. Give it a hundred miles or more before you say for sure that it stays off.

Very good point. I'm headed to the middle of the state this weekend (200+ mile round trip). I'll be watching it.

All the noticeable stuff changed higher in the powerband (exhaust note, seems to pull harder).

Any News? Dealership just replaced my Exhaust manifold. I was in for the Master cylinder recall, They finish and test drove the car to make sure everything was ok, came back, showed me it was done, then noticed the exhaust manifold was glowing. I didnt even have to say anything, they took the car back in, and replaced the manifold. I love my dealership, most of the time.

now some notes.
if youre planning on staying stock looking, i wouldnt do this because every bolt broke off in the holes leaving no chance of getting them out with an easy out.
there are 4 oxygen sensors, be sure you unplug all of them. keep looking, they are all there.
to get the honeycomb out we used a wrench, a ratchet, a long extension, some rigid flat metal piece, screwdrivers. use whatever you can find because they all worked for different parts. its a fucking cunt, so just stick with it until its all out.
dont let the belt slip off of the other accessories while you have the alternator removed. its not that hard to get the belt back on but its easier to zip tie it out of the way.
be sure you reconnect all of the connectors...alternator, oxy sensors, battery terminal.
peace punk bitches

hmm... for me its either do this or a fab a b15 header and down pipe onto my car and get 02 sims put in
Offline

Greg

I did this before that idea came up and before I found a shop to make me the header/exhaust.
This works for people that want to eliminate the fear of the dreaded pre-kitty failure
Offline

Blake

yeah I know what it does and I know you did make this b4 anyone though of the b15/b16 hybrid exhaust thing. I'm a big DIY kinda guy and its nice to see others like me aswell. Its just a dilemna for me because I can chizzle the kittys out for $0 or hotshot header + downpipe installed for 250-300ish =/
Offline

Greg

If you're not going f/i anytime soon, get one made. That way, you're only taking the stock one out once lol.
I'm lazy. Don't mind me.
Offline

Blake

I got a shop that wants $650 for a custom header, but they want my car for like month to custom make it. I cant afford to be w/o a car for that long. I'm probly gunna b15/b16 hybrid header that bish, my buddy wants to sell a hotshot header and down pipe for $175. Put that bish on and drive open down pipe to a shop and have em custom weld it to the mid pipe.
