New member of the Sentra club!

What's goin' on guys?

I've recently purchased a 2008 Sentra SE-R (Non spec-v) and I'm assuming I'm still welcome at these forums??? This is my first new car and I'll be honest, my first real "performance" automobile, hell I'm coming off a 98 accent. So I got a few questions as a new member of this new car/Nissan car club.

First, what kind of an aftermarket is there for the SE-R in general? I'm looking to make this a performance auto and I was wondering how many things are available to me. I have a K&N filter coming and...that's about it lol. I'm really new to the tuner aspect of cars too. I know my way around an engine and know plenty of people who know shit a hell of a lot better then me period and I don't really know where to start down the road of increasing efficiency and performance.

Second, about keeping this car new and running correctly. I'm not used to being worried about an automobile as I drove junkers since I got my license, but this is like a new pair of shoes to me, any dirt, grit, grime, noise, drives me nuts lol. So what I'm trying to get at is, what should any new car driver know to be keeping this car specifically, pristine, running as well as the day I got it (or better) so on and so forth.

I got a 3 year 100,000 mile warranty, but I'd like to know more about it personally, so I'm not getting the run around with mechanics and would greatly appreciate any experience you could pass on to me.

Third, I'm getting the recall issue looked at tomorrow morning at Carmax, is there any physical signs I could tell driving it that I have said problem? Oh and how long does it take to fix?

Forth, since I've never owned a new automobile, I dunno much about noises that come out of a new auto, but I noticed a slight creaking coming from the rear of the car and I wasn't sure if that's what tight suspension sounds like or what? It has about 700 miles on the thing, so could it just be it's not "broken in" yet?

Personally, I am really proud to own this automobile, and I wanna treat it right and if I can make it even better, then I want to do that too.

So I thank you ahead of time for any wisdom you could bestow on me and I look forward to becoming a productive member of this forum!

Re: New member of the Sentra club!

well....congrats on the purchase. Dont smoke or eat in the car, thats the general idea of keeping it clean. we have a carbon fiber hood. LED tailights, coilovers and springs, short ram and cold air intake, axleback mufflers, header (soon). We dont have a HUGE aftermarket support, but were slowly growing.

aftermarket = currently none, in a few weeks... ALOT

why dont you be the first SE-R CVT turbo?

if you know your way around an engine look up the service manuals and all of our how-to's on this site to guide you on how to tune this vehicle. it essentially is a qr25de just revs higher and has more top end.

creaking... well mine came from front of vehicle when i got mine and steering column needed replacing. GET THAT INSPECTED.

Re: New member of the Sentra club!

Now that's a forum reply with the quickness!

Thanks from both of you.

Yeah, I'm a smoker personally, and I haven't smoked even once in that car and eating is off limits. Still has that new car smell :-)

I'm personally very interested in putting a turbo in this car...I'm pretty ballsy when it comes to things I'm interested in, so I'd be willing to take the plunge, and I have the income. If my understanding of turbo is correct, I'm gonna need to build up to it correct? Stock everything wouldn't be able to handle all that power, would it?

Also, I'll see if they can look at my steering column tomorrow in addition to the recall issue.

When I get off work here, I'm gonna look at your guys stuff, do some research, I'm actually at work right now, so I do have to monitor certain things in between, posts, but I'm extremely passionate about making this car all it can be. Question is, in the mean time, after I get all these potential issue's looked at, what should I attempt to install myself first? Got any beginners tips? I was thinking the cold air intake? I'm told that is a great starting point by most people around where I live.

Also, what is the top-end of the 2008 SE-R. I saw some threads on the Spec-v but not this one. It seems like it's pretty quick, and it's still a tad jarring to see the CVT work as it's so smooth. I haven't really attempted to break into it, but there is a stretch of 83 around my way that is dead like a ghost after hours :-)

Once again, thanks alot!

Re: New member of the Sentra club!

Yeh I was curious myself why you didnt get a spec, especially when you said you could afford it. The spec is 200hp and like 185?torque the SER is still good though. I would say get an exhuast and a cold air intake for starters, but if you plan on turbo'ing I would'nt buy either, your going to replace both with your turbo setup if you turbo. I dont have CVT (specs dont have it) but there are threads on here debating the idea of turboing a car with CVT. Where are you from?

Re: New member of the Sentra club!

I call Reisterstown, Maryland home. Small little town with plenty of car enthusiasts. It's pretty much your standard Civic tuner town heaven you see a lot of places though and I didn't just wanna be another clone up at car meets and talk about the same stuff, and I really liked the Sentra, I even drove a Spec-V and SE-R back to back and thought that they drove pretty similar. That and this car doubles as my commuter car to work, and quite frankly, coming off past cars with a manual, I got kind of sick of driving a manual car in gridlock when I get off work in the morning. That and I was very interested in CVT for whatever reason it made me curious.

I figured, the stuff that comes on the spec-v that isn't on the SE-R would be easily attainable. I figured, since I got sports tuned springs, I could get the suspension and stuff spec-v-afied with time and the 23 HP I lost would be easily gained. I'm definitely interested in turbo-ing, I don't mind being a g-pig for uncharted territory.

Re: New member of the Sentra club!

congrats on the car. I too went from a beater to a new car just about 8 months ago. I used to drive a 1988 acura legend which was my first car and i loved but desided i wanted something more reliable and fun to drive.  I coudnt deside if i wanted the ser or the spec for the same reason, thought id get tired of driving manual but i said fuck it and went with the 08 spec. smiley-tup

Re: New member of the Sentra club!

There are aftermarket available Rak...  You know that.

As of now, your performance options are: CAI, Cat-back or Axle-Back exhuast system, Brake kits.  There are also exterior mods available as well such as, Roof Wing, Stillen Front Lip...

There's not a lot of aftermarket out there at the moment, but there are some out there.  Rak is working with a company right now to have more parts developed for us.

^^^ ya rako stop being a sell out. Anyways as Zan said there is some aftermarket for us Mostly just some basic stuff. The company rako's with will be releasing more stuff that we don't currently have for the car.

Also if you haven't had a new car yet. Don't forget to take it easy on the engine for break in. If you drive the shit out of it you can risk scoring the cylinders among other things.

Re: New member of the Sentra club!

welcome man , apparently you're enjoying the car.  My suggestion, if you really wanna go turbo don't buy anything other than visuals and/or suspension stuff.  If you have the income apparently the KSport coilovers are the way to go.  Megan Racing also has adjustable coilovers as well, but the KSports have a pillowball joint included.  throw some lighter rims and drop it and I would call it good for a while till turbo is really there for you.
