Glowing Header, Normal?

Exact driving situations tonight.

was about 150 miles into my trip NEVER getting on it, did 80 miles highway at 65, did about 60 miles at 55 and the rest small towns 35-25 mph.  Now as i was in a smaller town, i didnt reeally have as much tourqe as usuall at lower RPMS,  then when i went into like 3k it pulled timing hard or fell on its face whatever you want ot call it.   Note i was running 93.  So i figured shitty gas, so i stop at taco bell and dump some octane booster and check the header no glow or nothing.  So i start her back up and take off I open a lil to 5k and on into third gear up to 4500 and it feel good.  so i go back to driving normally.  I open it up the rest of my route a couple times like to 6kish everything is fine, i get some BP 93 and fill up to make sure i got the bad gas out.  SO i drop off my containers around home and i take a lil cruise through some twisties around my house nothin redline just 5-6k through 3rd, so then i drive about 1 miles normal driving to my house, pop the hood and i see the pre cat 02 sensor bung glowing RED not super melting but glowing.  Er... Normal?

yeah we got onto you about it because apparently you weren't even having any symptoms to a failure whatsoever.  he is.  you were just worried that it's a slim possibility.  if you're still worried go drive like he did and check it like he did then bring it into the dealer.  I drive the PISS outta my car pretty often and just hit 20K miles yesterday and haven't had an issue like this.  I'll give you this, the general design for even having precats is flawed.

Re: Glowing Header, Normal?

nm i found out there is none.  so i have the pa's lemon law, if my motor tanks, i can try to tank it two more times in a year.  then voila, i have my moneis back.  But this is gay.  So really there is no other reason for my car to have a glowing header at 1.6k rather than it sux majorness

Re: Glowing Header, Normal?

I don't know what to say. I mean I drive my car so freaking hard every damn day, and then baby it for a while and my car has responded with nothing but begging for me.

I mean it is a little shady that you were mentioning it over and over again, and then suddenly a day or two later it happens?

I'm on your side bro, tell Nissan and get a new motor and then trade out.

Re: Glowing Header, Normal?

FUCK THAT. drive the piss out of it untill your motor blows. Then you get a rental. Chances are your rental is going to be nicer than your spec, you want the lemon law then wait till your rotars warp, then check out the ibeam and brake cylinder recall. worst comes to worst you get a brand new motor. Ive only hear of this happening to 08's whats up with that?

AH HA, another one bites the dust ah. Someday nissan will finally understand that they suck and stop with the precat bull shit. How many engines will  they have to replace before they fix this. I am waiting for my second engine to just throw a rod threw the block. GOOD LUCK MAN. Take it to the dealer now or wait till it blows. either way

Re: Glowing Header, Normal?

your fine but get a header. reason y it was glowing cuz it's getting restricted in that section.  same thing happen to me with my header, but in my case the whole header was glowing like bright orange.  It just means it's restricted and needs more of an opening to let the exhaust out faster.  A header and a 2.5 inch down pipe will do u good.

The 07-08's have been better than the 02-03's, not half the board of B16's have had motors replaced like the B15's.

Re: Glowing Header, Normal?

Well just to re-assert my self, i drove it pretty hard for a bout 30 seconds and yes my cats were ablaze orange, i would not care if i didnt use it to drive 100 miles out, i just dont want to be stranded this winter.  This is the first time ive tried nissan and will be the last.  They have no 24 hour breakdown assistance, i cannot et a hold of anyone, the service manager said "The header will glow orange during long distance driving" "Unless the check engine light comes on, then its okay"  ZOMGWTF  I just cant wait the leave a pile of rods and oil in there lot.  The other thing is too is im killing my motor slowly with all this heat

Don't take that for an answer. Go to another dealer if you have one close.

They are fucking with you. Call Nissan Corporate if they don't wanna work with you.  A glowing header is NOT normal.  Either EGT's are through the roof, or the cats are clogging.  Either way, NOT GOOD.

Re: Glowing Header, Normal?

Hahah go figure I was bashing you about it, and on my drive to PSU this weekend I noticed my car start to lag pretty bad and I could tell it was straining a little more cause I could hear the intake while cruise controlled.

I pulled over and low and behold my header is glowing bright orange, so I take a pic with my cell phone and I let it cool down for about 5 mins it was done glowing well before that and drove away and the car was just fine, didn't do it at all.

I figured it was due to using cruise control to much, I was getting 35mpg which was pretty badass, but I don't need my motor blowing over a few more mpg. I'll call Nissan about it this week.

I was 200+ miles away from home and I made it just fine, and on one tank of gas too (both ways smiley-tongue)

Re: Glowing Header, Normal?

See, nissan really needs to fix this problem. I mean its really bull shit- How many glowing headers has that been about 5 maybe more? I am sure there are people who arent on myspecV with this problem. GRRRRRR its makes me mad. I love my car if it didnt have issues. I cant even feel confident while driving my car. I am always thinking in the back of my head that its gonna just blow up again. Its giving me grey hairs lol..

I should be taking care of it this week... I have two big interviews that I'm really excited about.

I'm off Thursday and Friday... Maybe I'll do it then. I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures.

Re: Glowing Header, Normal?

ok so this is my first nissan and im a noob so maybe you guys can answer a few questions

1. do you feel that this problem is directly related to the cruise control and if so how would it affect the engine to do this.
2. would this only affect the specv
3. would removing the precats void my warranty, what is there purpose and why do they have so many problems.
4. and any b15 guys who had there engine replaced because of precat failure do they replace it even after your out of warranty with them.

i just find it sad that an engine can blow so new even for the past b15 guys

1. No
2. possibly, if they use a diff. cat that supposibly flows better
3. Yes it would
4. I had 40k miles on mine before I installed an aftermarket header, I got lucky I guess?

You guys seriously need to go through corperate on this, dealers wont fix anything untill they are told do so by Nissan. That way they know there going to get paid for recall work.
Of just gut your cats and be done with it.

Re: Glowing Header, Normal?

Why don't take some pictures or a video and get ahold of the district rep. They hate being bothered and usually give in. Usually when a customer complains and it reaches the district rep he tells our dealership to do whatever it takes to fix the problem and he'll sign off on it.

They rather get some one off of their back than drive from NJ to NH just to say fix it.

Well nothing is broken and the car drives fine now, but something is still wrong, and there isn't much they can do otherwise unless something breaks, Or maybe I'm mistaken.

I don't know.

Re: Glowing Header, Normal?

Well an update.  my header only glows at night, not during the day.   but i went to the dealer and drove with there master technicoian, he knew all about the problems of the past, told him of the cases here.  i took him for a ride, stomped the dog balls out of it, showed him the header, couldnt see it in daylight.  so we went back, he waqs very respectful and said he would od everyting he could, he would put it into a claim and see if there is anything to do.  if engineers cannot come up with anythnig then nothnig can be done.  So he agreed with me that the best resolve would be to blow it the fuck up.  PEACE.
