How To: paint rims in 50 steps or less... Updated 8-21-08 more pics

LOL, Ok, besides the title, this post is long overdue.  There are many ways to paint rims, Everyone has their own Technique.  This is what works for me.

BTW, these are Enkei rims for my friend Vinny for his 2007 2.0L Sentra, which is why they are 4 lug.  Also, later, i will post of how to make the silver edge on the rims when i update this tommorow.  Oh, and i did paint the tires, but the paint doesnt stick to Rubber, so after a few miles of driving, the paint peels right off the tire.

Tools Needed

- Assorted Sand Paper

- Perferably a Palm Sander

- Sand blaster as a better option (ProZach626)

- Water

- Soap

- Rags

- Paint of your choice (I use Engine Enamel)

- Painters Tape

- Sunny day with LOW humidity!!!

- Rims

Instructions

1)  Grab your rims, and clean the crap out of them with soap and water, inside and out.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/djtorello/Nissan%20Sentra/DSCF4060.jpg

2) Dry them off, OR let mother nature's beautiful rays of light dry them for you.

3) Use sand paper and sand the inside of the rims and the outside, till any damage and or rough surface is gone.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/djtorello/Nissan%20Sentra/DSCF4051.jpg

4) Re Wash rims with soap and water, making sure any and ALL debris is gone, the Better you do this, the better the rims will come out in the long run.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/djtorello/Nissan%20Sentra/DSCF4060.jpg

5)  Find a place to paint them, a lawn works well, just remember to use a bag or cardboard to protect lawn from overspray.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/djtorello/Nissan%20Sentra/DSCF4059.jpg

6) Paint the INSIDE FIRST.  This way, they will have an even coat, when you look through from the outside, in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/djtorello/Nissan%20Sentra/DSCF4064.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/djtorello/Nissan%20Sentra/DSCF4065.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/djtorello/Nissan%20Sentra/DSCF4068.jpg

7)  Let dry, then apply another coat.

8) Repeat  step 7, one or two more times depending on your paint option and your painting abilities.

9) When dry, Flip rims over, and paint the outside.  Start with between the spokes first, and the hub section, then work on the ribs themselves.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/djtorello/Nissan%20Sentra/DSCF4048.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/djtorello/Nissan%20Sentra/DSCF4047.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/djtorello/Nissan%20Sentra/DSCF4049.jpg

10) repeat steps 7 and 8 on the outside of the rim.

11)  Enjoy the beauty of your work, AND LET DRY OVERNIGHT, to make sure the paint cures properly.

12) Install on vehicle, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

13) Now post pics here, and please send comments to me if you need help or for thanks.

smiley-smile

Update:  Here is the car they were for. Car was just washed so you will see some water spots, but no worries.

Also you will see the Silver strip around the rim, Took a while but it came out great.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v646/djtorello/Nissan%20Sentra/DSCF4116.jpg

Dont mind the white marks on the rim on the last picture, its wax.  Just letting it haze before i wipe it off, Gonna take a clean pic but my batteries died.

There will be a few more pics in a few days.  We got a few club pics from last night that a friend is photoshopping the bird crap off my hood.  Damn rats with wings.

Re: How To: paint rims in 50 steps or less... Updated 8-21-08 more pics

If I can make a suggestion when I painted my rims I sanded between each coat. So I started by sanding with 200 grit to get out any curb damage, then 400 to scuff up the rest.  Then I washed them with warm soapy water.  Then I painted, waited about 30mins, sanded just lightly again just to scuff the paint and possibly any blumishes. Wash, paint, sand, and did this a total of 3 times.  Then I let the paint dry about 30min to an hour and started to put on the clear coat.  I didn't sand between clear coats.  But don't over spray or the clear will fog up and turn white.

Also I used a deck of cards to protect my wheels.  It worked fantastic and you don't have the trouble of tape.

http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c250/ryokojay/se-r/IMGP1788.jpg

I hope this can help with painting your rims.  Sanding between each coat is key so the next layer will stick to the previous.

i didnt clear coat mine at all. I used a thick but strong high  temp paint, Engine enamel.  Beautiful Gloss finish with nearly perfect reflection.  I did how ever wax them to retain the shine after they cured/dried for a full 24hrs.

More pics later today for the results.

I just f'ed up one of my stock wheels this morning.  This is probably a good time to paint them.  Which would be better to use, the engine enamel or the rim paint?

the paint doesnt stick to rubber.  After a few miles it just flakes off the tires.

Use Acetone to clean the rims after you have cleaned them with soap and water. Available at home depot in the paint section by paint thinner. Acetone will remove any oil that was left from your hands that normal soap and water will not remove. Remember when you paint you want the paint to stick nicely and not warp or flake in any spots. Acetone will totally remove any debris and prepares surface for paint. Acetone is also fast drying, it almost evaporate instantly.

You can also use dish soap on the tires to keep paint from sticking to them. The lighter your coats of paint are the more it will stick to the rubber. Light mist doesn't come off easy when it eats into the rubber. Most laquer based paints (spray cans) will melt the rubber slightly and stick around the rim where the rubber doesn't give as much. Silver sidewalls suck.

How deep was the curb rash on these wheels or does it matter because it will be sanded out completely?  I was learning the dimensions of my car and then I rashed my wheels pretty bad.

Wow, that looks awesome.

You have "preferably a palm sander" in your how-to. You might want to add that it's always best to use a sand blaster, if you have access.

I got a chance last weekend to paint those bastards.  I used the Bondo Spot Filler for the curb rash and sanded smooth.  I used the Duplicolor High Performance Wheel Paint and they turned out pretty sweet!.  I didn't spray them with clear though.  I'm going to let the paint cure for about a weekend and then clean them and slather them with a nice layer of wax.  I'll have pics in my showoff page probably by this weekend.

That's what I did.  I would recommend doing it.  Be sure to scuff up the wheels before you primer and lightly sand between each coat of primer.  I put 2 coats of primer before painting and then 2 coats of paint.

Re: How To: paint rims in 50 steps or less... Updated 8-21-08 more pics

ok so i am painting my rims this weekend and this is how i plan to do it, tell me if it sounds good....

fist i will buy the rim paint that i saw in autozone....
then i will go to home depot and buy primer, clear coat, 200 grit and 400grit sand paper, and also purchase some acetone...
i will sand with the 200 grit to try to get some road rash out
then i will wash with soap and water, dry it up and then use the acetone....
i will then primer the rims with only one coat , then sand with the 400 grit
wash the rims again
then begin to paint, sand in between each coat.... and do this for about 3 times
after i am done with all that i will do 2 coats of clear and then let the rims air dry....

how does that sound guys,

i just got some new used tires lol that i would be putting on the rims after i am done...

Just lettin everybody know that if u do this with tires off there's a good possibility that when tires get put on that the paint may chip on the lip. I know mine did, it wasn't really the tire shops fault. Just the tire machine ended up scraping it.

Just wondering out of sheer dumb curiosity.  How do you get the extra shimmer when painting? Is it clear coating, sanding, extra paint coats or what? stupid question that might of been answered already, i know, but i want to know.

nice write up btw

The shimmer is probably resulting from the base coat (color coat) having a metallic or pearl property.  So you'd want to look for a paint that is like that... I think most spray can wheel paint except for solid black has a shimmery property to it.
