My quest for 300 miles on a tank of gas! *Update*

I'm sure a lot of people can do this easily but I can't... I finally decided to start trying to see how many miles I can go on a full tank of gas and calculate my gas mileage myself instead of going by the gauge on the dash that isn't very accurate. Usually it stays around 23-25mpg and that is with getting on it every day and shifting above 2k rpm, downshifting to slow down, you know, enjoying the car lol, but not like redling every gear or anything.... So if it was saying 23-25 with that, I was thinking I was about 20-22mpg realisticly.... I decided that I was going to start trying to save gas. I started shifting every gear at 2k rpm and I skip 3rd and 5th gear, coast to stop lights in neutral, and use cruise control whenever possible. During the last 2 tanks of gas I hardly got on in much.... With doing that I thought for sure I could get if not be close to getting 25mpg.... The first tank I got I ended up with 18 mpg and 20 mpg on the second tank.... So when I "enjoy the car" more I'm sure it's down to about 15mpg...... I know our cars aren't the best on gas, but come on. Could something be wrong with my car? I know someone with a stock same year Spec V as me and he's getting 350 miles on a tank and sometimes close to 400. I didn't think it should be that much of a difference between stock and modded, and like I said. I was doing everything I could to save gas.... Maybe all those "ecu reprogramming" recalls I taken it in for they screwed something up? I notice on hotter days sitting at stop lights I can smell gas.

Also, my boss has a G8 with the 6.0L and getting better gas mileage than me... smiley-sad

All tires are at 35psi.
Oil is good.
Spark plugs are original. 43k miles. Says to change them at 100k miles. smiley-nixweiss

Edit: I checked my plugs at around 35k and they looked fine

Re: My quest for 300 miles on a tank of gas! *Update*

Dude, something must be wrong with your car. I have I/H/DP/E/cut chain and before I moved to the city I used to get 330~350 miles per tank when I lived in the suburbs. Now it's more like 300~310. Just today I happened to take a look and I was at 308 and the light hadn't even come on.

Re: My quest for 300 miles on a tank of gas! *Update*

I've been keeping track since February and so far my overall MPG is 27.51 mpg.  I shift between 2-3k and do a good mix of highway and city driving.  Sometimes I'll coast to a stop in neutral, other times I coast in gear (the injectors shut off).  I have a VERY casual driving style, no jackassery.  I'll punch it maybe once a day or so just for shits and giggles.

Hey man, we just need to take a step back and troubleshoot.  Its probably something simple.  Maybe check your O2 sensors, maybe check the plugs again.  Perhaps you should drop some money on a wideband or a trip to the dyno just to see if you're running ezzra ezzra rich.

yep, im n/a and get about 21mpg daily driving. i drive about 95% city, shift around 2200rpms usually, etc.

if you coast while in gear, you save more gas than if you cost in neutral. as long as you coast while over 1500rpms.

Re: My quest for 300 miles on a tank of gas! *Update*

first of all, decelerate in gear. it shuts off the injectors completely. you burn gas when you roll in neutral.

shift below 2k and on flat road, you can do it at 1500. this engine has torque. use that to your advantage. and go into the highest gear possible for that speed. I will be in 6th gear doing about 25mph and the rpms are right above 1000rpm. I never let the engine go below 1k rpm while in gear, if you do, it will strain and thats obviously not good for it. the torque will just push it along without straining. the lowest the cruise control will go is 25mph. cruise control, use it. dont accelerate too fast. fuck the other cars on the road and being nice to them by accelerating fast so they dont get mad. those days are over and gas prices are too high to waste your gas being nice to other people by doing that, fuck them and let them burn their own gas and dont let them force you to burn more of yours for their gain of simply passing and getting in front of you. This doesnt mean drive in the left lane and go slow. Remain a courteous driver and do not go out of your way for them if it means you have to burn more gas to do it. You still need to get over to the right if you can and not drive like a fuckin grandmother thats blind.

Its because the forced induction brings the engine's efficiency up because it doesnt have to work so hard to suck in air.

Since I bought the car in 03 i've been getting 300-350 with mixed driving, and it did not change when I modded it, but I did notice I could get on it more and not burn as much gas when I tuned it.

i get like 20 mpgs out of mine with nothing but a CAI.  I get about 220-230 max out of a tank.  I dont normally use AC at all but this is with mostly city driving and i shift around 3k.  Im going to do a oil change today and see if that helps.

Re: My quest for 300 miles on a tank of gas! *Update*

Wow so i'm not the only one!
I get about 240-250 miles on a single tank. I do 30 miles a day on highway at like 80mph.
The rest of the day i do suburb driving. My computer says i get about 22-24 average. I use 93 octane gas from shell or sunoco in my area. My tires are at 35psi
I have I/H/E This is shitty as hell! I drive like normal do the occasoinal flooring while mirging onto highway and passing if i need to. I think i should be getting more mpg then this. My friend has a tC and he easily gets 300 a tank, 400-450 while on highway and he only has a 1 gallon bigger tank then i do!
I can't ever get more then 25mpg on my car its insane! I go 240-250 miles and fill up 11 gallons!

Has anyone tried the new Mobil 1 0-w30 oil? It's supposed to give you better gas mileage.

Re: My quest for 300 miles on a tank of gas! *Update*

I typically get around 200-220 a tank depending on how I drive. That is with nearly 100% city driving and a good amount of ac use. On highway trips I can pull around 300 to a tank.

My Spec would get 21-23mpg in town with a/c, and about 27-30mpg highway with a/c. The last trip I went on got 350 miles when the light came on.

Re: My quest for 300 miles on a tank of gas! *Update*

another trick you can do is to SAFELY draft behind semi's or other big trucks. safely as in not too close behind. any decreased wind resistance helps. i've had to do that in the past when running on fumes. funny how i seem to drive more economically/efficiently when i'm low on fuel...

Re: My quest for 300 miles on a tank of gas! *Update*

I just recently calculated my gas mileage. I went 273.8 miles on 11.130 gallons, which came out to 24.6 mpg.  Thats with about 75% city driving. I also usually shift at around 2.5k but I can't say I don't enjoy hearing my secondaries open up every once in a while too.

so buying an afc neo and actually getting it tuned would make a difference with my gas mileage? a local shop charges 225 an hour on the dyno, is that what they usually run at?

a tune might help, but 225 an hr is way too much. i pay $75 an hour at my local shop

$225/hr is very high, he might be talking about dyno+tune and not just dyno.

Re: My quest for 300 miles on a tank of gas! *Update*

I get 24-26 mpg on my 50 mile per day commute (mixed highway and city driving).  If it's all highway, I can get as high as 34 mpg.  I've never seen 400 miles on a tank though, but 300 on a regular basis.  BTW, I'm never nice to it and I almost never shift below 4000 rpms.  Downshifting saves gas too, as it shuts the injectors off while off the throttle in gear.  It has to use fuel at idle.

RedDragonV09 - I just wanted to say that I tried your way on a whole tank of gas. I got on it probably like 4-5 times. I did have a problem with skipping 5th gear when shifting at 1,500RPM. It would start off below 1,000 RPM so I started using 5th gear.... I was shocked at how well I did. Before I was getting like 275-280ish on a tank. Your way I was able to get to 334 before the light came on.

smiley-smile See what I mean? Use the highest gear possible for your speed thats above 1000rpm, dont let it get under that, and if it does, downshift to the next lower gear. I cruise at 30mph in 6th and the torque  at 1100rpm will just pull the car, I dont have to touch the pedal unless I start going uphill. The throttle is open to about 0.2%-0.6% when I do this. You can put on Cruise and it will just chug right along with no worries.

Re: My quest for 300 miles on a tank of gas! *Update*

See this is what pisses me off. People who are boosted, supercharged, or have v8s get better gas mileage than me. I'm stuck driving this slow ass car shitty gas mileage car.

I'm with ya man i only got 192 miles out of my last tank and i am running the 93 at my local station so don't feel alone i really think something is wrong with mine.. I only bought it 1 month and 1 week ago.. So I am really not sure what to do.. It has been to the dealer 5 times as of yesterday.
