Right now I am on my fourth VQ engine. The first one(the one in the pics) made it on a 700 mile road trip on a base map(not good for running on a long time I suppose), and then started smoking. I think the motor may have allready had issues before I bought it. I went to a salvage yard, got myself another VQ for 650$. 70,000 miles on it. That motor was fucking awsome. 150+ compression on all cylinders, real clean inside the valve cover. I got a real nice street tune on it.
Then I decided to race a viper. not only did he pull me, I somehow managed to shift from 3rd to 2nd? I still don't know how that happened, I am no bitch shifter. I allready had the redline set and tuned to 7000RPM(400 over stock). evidently, VQ's dont like 9000 rpms so much.
bent a valve, crushed the sparkplug, metal shards, ect. fortunatly, the motor was under warrenty. now after 2 days of hard work and late nights, I have the third motor in. it turns over, but wont fire up. no fuel and no spark. hopefully after work today, I can get it running. I really have a blast working on my car, its just frustrating at times... if any body with a swap needs any extra VQ parts, I got them all, just ask.

Very New VQ(my first one, altima SER w/9000 miles. bad bottom end)
http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g259/fallinlikerayne/000_0002.jpg
Very Old VQ

Update 08/07/08: MOTOR #3
Finally got it running, don't know how exactly. I just kept messing with things, and bam it fires up. now that the third VQ is alive, I will start reaking havack once more -after my dyno tune.
it had some serious knock at first. after a fresh tank of gas, it went away. It sounds really strong and smooth, just what I wanted from this 87,000 mile motor.

Update 09/03/2008: MOTOR #3
Turns out the last motor had a spun rod(I have the worst fucking luck). I pulled it, and took it back to the salavage yard. It looked like it had 150,000+ miles on it anyways

I purchased an 2004 maxima motor with about 40,000. EXTREMELY clean motor. Got it running and had it tunned about a week ago, no problems since. Found out that there are different variations for the 2004+ motors vs 02/03 motors. that have different crank positions. my buddy(don24) and I had to drill out a new hole for the crank position sensor.  other than that, its a great motor. tunned it with a 6800 RPM rev limit.

Update 09/07/2008 MOTOR #4
Wow, I have the worst luck. evidently during my drive back home, my right front coil went out. didn't here anything different though.car seemed fine, except at a low RPM. thump, thump, thump, in rythm. not very loud. I didn't think much of it, until my car started feeling a little slow. next thing I know, a 350Z pulls up next to me along with some fag in a mustang(green neons, yuck). we take off, I start pulling up to them, but my car feels a little weak, a very slow pull(not likely for a 350z/mustang GT) 2nd, slam 3rd, pulling. I let off top of 3rd. look over at the laptop, RPMS are at 0? pop the clutch out, pull up to do a u-turn, and next thing I know I am surounded by blue smoke.
took it to autozone and borrowed a compression tester. 160, 165, 60? oh, yeah piston 3 is done, I can see oil on top of it. I am 99% sure I washed a ring out. so, my plans for the next few months include....

A Fucking CAR cover

uh, disgusted with my VQ luck. I still don't believe it's the motor. my second engine is on an engine stand, and will be in my living room for the next few months. its getting honed out, 10.5:1 JE pistons, eagle rods, Brian Crower Stage3 cams, BC (1mm+)valves, Valve spring/retainers, port and polish, Z33 head gasket, 150shot.
just got to come up with about 3K, and its gonna take some time.

that run was with VVT and put put 243whp, 224wtq. we got the torque with VVT on around 235 or so. but with VVT off, I ended up with 247 and 226. you can see the dip in the graph where it "kicks" on.

idk if i missed it or not. but what numbers did you put down?

that run was with VVT and put put 243whp, 224wtq. we got the torque with VVT on around 235 or so. but with VVT off, I ended up with 247 and 226. you can see the dip in the graph where it "kicks" on.

good shit. lucky. haha

Re: SER02/02 VQ'd Spec V/North Carolina

man Im so so jealous! Would love to come and see the ride. How far is Mooresville from Morrisville NC?? Im right next to raleigh

Edit: I just watched the vids. There is a turbo spec there too?? OMG Ive only seen another modded spec in my area 2 times, one had a big wing and I believe one of those fake turbo things, sounded boosted but I beat him, and a dropped spec with an exhaust going the opposite direction. Very nice!

right now its in hillsboro(chapel hill), but not running well. sounds good at high RPM, but smokes and is real choppy down low. piston 3 on the front row is gone. it is really a sad sight. Im driving through hillsborough friday to put a car cover on it. smiley-sad

Very nice. Did you do the swap without help from forced induction racing?

He did it without FIR... but it doesn't run on a stock ECU (standalone)... FI-Rs is very much "stock" running...

Re: SER02/02 VQ'd Spec V/North Carolina

It's great to see someone taking the initiative to do one of these swaps themselves. It give me hope that a mortal like me could pull it off one day!
