Well, it's been a few months since I've had time to sit down and think about getting started on this.. but, it looks like I'll finally be able to dedicate some time to R&D/Testing in the coming months..
So, once again, I'm looking for ONE person/test vehicle, in exchange for a nice discount on a installed/tuned turbo kit. I will be looking to take the vehicle in around the 3rd-4th week of August, and I will need it for approximately 1 month. Here's what you will recieve..
FI-R Equal length, short runner 304 stainless turbo manifold (TIG welded, lifetime warranty against cracking)
FI-R Stainless 2.5" or 3" downpipe.. (your choice, lifetime warranty against cracking)
FI-R Stainless intercooler piping kit
3 ply silicone intercooler hoses with T-bolt clamps
Greddy Type S BOV
FI-R Stainless 3" inlet pipe/filter
Precision T3/T04E (50 trim/T350 standard.. SC6176E optional)
Tial 38mm wastegate
FI-R Stainless wastegate dump tube
FI-R bar/plate intercooler
Mototron 60lb injectors
Apexi SAFC NEO (Optional Apexi FI/C)
Stainless braided oil feed/drain lines with billet aluminum fittings/flanges
All nuts, bolts, washers, brackets, etc...
This will be a bolt-on kit.. out of the box, good for around 325whp.. And capable of around 550whp with upgrades to the short block, tuning, and fuel.
I will rigorously test this setup on the test-car.. Once testing is complete, and I can verify that the setup is safe/dependable.. it will go into production. I believe that testing is critical before any product is introduced into the market.. With FI-R, you know what you're getting.. We don't ask for your money up front.. we don't outsource anything to China.. All of our parts are 100% made in America. We boast a lifetime warranty on fabbed parts, against breakage.. and everything is made from good, quality stainless.. not that cheap stuff that you get overseas.. that turns brown/green after running your engine for an hour.
As we are using parts made in America.. our kit will be a little more expensive.. However, you are recieving a equal length manifold, and top quality parts.
Price will be set at 4,995.00 (retail), with a POSSIBLE group buy once we get production underway. I may do a small (5 kit) group buy out of the door, at 4,695.00. If you want to upgrade to the SC61 turbo, there will be a 200.00 charge.
You guys know my work.. this is going to be a top notch kit..
As far as the test vehicle.. I will offer a 100%, no questions asked guarantee, in writing... that if we break ANYTHING on the vehicle DURING TESTING, we will cover it, 100%. I will offer a turbo kit, installed/tuned, for 3995.00 to the first person that agrees to work with us. That's a savings of about 2K on the kit and install/tuning..
Again.. I am only looking for ONE test vehicle.. Feel free to PM me with location, and other info, and I'll be in touch.
Thanks,
Travis

Can I order mine with cheaper foreign made parts and less testing?
J/k
It's great to hear that the projects is on the way... when a test car arrives. I'd give you mine but, I live too far! Oh well. Good luck on the project. I can't way to see the results.

I would be down for that... but, the only thing that I would reuse would be your fueling/control.. All of the hard parts would be replaced.. Figure deducting around 500.00 for the AFC and injectors. I would need it for the full time period, though.. as it will take that long to get jigs made, and then, production pieces, and test those out for a few weeks of driving/track testing. Let me know if this works for you.. PM me your number, and we'll talk.
*Edit*.. I guess we could possibly use your turbo and wastegate, too.. Unless you want to sell your "kit" to someone else.. that might make more sense, economically.. You could probably sell the "kit" for a couple grand to a B16 person, and recoup over 50% of your cost to have the new kit made.

lmfao.. Sadly though... that goes on in this business.. but, the savings is hardly ever passed on to the customer. If I wanted to be cheap, I could just send my stuff overseas, and have it mass produced.. It would cost me about 500.00 per "set" for a manifold, downpipe, dump tube, and intercooler piping/intercooler, if I bought about 5K worth from a Chinese manufacturer. That same setup, here, will cost me about 2K per "set".. but, it's made with much better material, and I can overlook QC while it's made.. Plus, I can offer a lifetime warranty. No warped flanges, or piping that doesn't fit.. Everything is built perfectly, every time.
So, you get a company that has Chinese made parts... charging 4K for a turbo kit, that has a cost of about 15-1800.00.. and pocketing over 100% profit margin. Highway robbery. I'm all about "making money".. but, I don't believe in cheating people by selling cheap parts for premium part prices..

Awesome to see this, Travis.
Not to thread-jack the turbo, but....
just in case Jeff winds up wanting this more than me, how about testing that VQ idea on my car?

Mike

your not offering the 1200 or so tuning and dynoing costs anymore??
Offline

Nah.. due to increases in material cost, and parts.. I simply can't offer that anymore.. Still, at the price that I'm offering, it's a bitchin deal..

man this comes at the worst time for me. about when you're going to need it, during that time period I'm REALLY going to need it for a month long class in san antonio. and what sucks is i only live a few hours from you. But supposedly I'm going on a deployment late this year/early next year. I'll talk with you travis about just leaving my car down there and you can use it as a testbed. I'm seriously considering that right now.

Bump for a soon to be badass kit. I would give Trav the business because out of anyone on this site running major business's he has been the most reliable and trustworthy.

well as a serious offer travis, I'm expecting to be deployed late this year/early next year. I'm willing to drop my car off for the whole prolly 6 months with you if you don't have another car by then. I would go ahead and drop it off for you if it weren't for the fact that it is my DD.

If I wind up going boost, I guess I'm the guinea pig
...still thinking VQ as well, though. Damn decisions...
Offline

Jason

i would love to have a vq under my hood but i'd rather have boost for now. I guess one nice thing is that i only live a few hours from travis. Seriously, as soon as i figure out times I'm droppin it off.
Offline

personally if i had the means, i would go vq.
seeing how living in cali though and i have never seen anyone but travis attempt this successfully, i would not go for it.
if you live by travis, go vq.

Offline

Greg

More likely it's going vq than anything... we'll see
Offline

if you do... you better post pics lol.
i cant wait for my turbo build to finish... its costing me an arm and a leg lol.

Offline

Will a VQ fit under the hood of a B16? The B16's front is so stubby... If it does fit, a VQ B16 would be dangerous. I'd probably be more interested in a VQ swap than a Turbo. From there, a Turbo VQ B16... *Creams Pants*
Offline

Greg

It'll fit with a *tad* bit of modification lol
It will work.
Offline

when you move some of the stuff under the hood you would be amazed how much space actually there is...

Offline

Greg

Hmm... I figured it couldn't be THAT cramped.
I guess we'll see soon enough
Offline

move the battery, intake, and header.
holy shit.
seriously if you got a few hours do it.
ill see if we can put some pics up after everything is done just to show this.

Offline

Well, I'll be waiting for the day when this happens. Ultimate Sleeper FTW!
Offline

charles

travis and i looked at a b16 the otherday at the dealership and yes there is enough room for a vq very little if any modification is needed.

How much work would it be to do the engine swap? What all would it involve doing? Seems like with the money/time involved in doing it, it would have been better to just buy a car with a V6. Though I know the VQ has quite the history.
