So, I've been in need for a wideband/datalogger set up for quite some time. And then I came across this http://www.14point7.com/JAW/JAW.htm I ordered the DIY kit with the display. So that's 80 bucks for a wideband/datalogger and display. I'll keep this thread updated with posts when it arrives, while its being assembled, and with it working (hopefully).

It will definitely be a learning experience for me.

Also, any tips on soldering would be greatly appreciated. This will be my first solder job.

Use 60/40 soldering wire with soldering flux already in it.
Choosing soldering wire is the MOST important, if you choose bad soldering wire, it won't stick and you will end up loosing your mind...
Also it helps to have a HEAVY DUTY soldering iron. I used to have a POS craftsman, that took at least 30-50 seconds to melt the soldering wire. Now I have a 15-20 year old HEAVY DUTY soldering iron, it's heavy and it's hardcore... It will melt the soldering wire in matter of 2-5 seconds...
I would suggest that you buy some wire and practice soldering on that first, before you tackle the DIY wideband.
After several practice soldering jobs, you should pretty much master it, it is NOT that hard...
If you have any other questions about soldering, just ask me

what exactly would you consider a heavy duty iron?

Depending on what your soldering, you can use a butane lighter. I have one thats in the shape of a pistol. I always use it to solder wires and the like. however circuitry I cant use it on so I have an electric iron that I use for that.

this will be for circuitry. But I will need one for wires when I do my safc install. Is there one that would work well with both?

an electric one will work with both, however Ive found that the butane works excellent with wires since it heats the solder so fucking fast.

So this came in the mail today
And inside that was this
And inside that was this
And earlier this week this came in
So, I'll get started on getting this soldered up tonight and hopefully have pics up soon.
Also, if this works well and there is enough interest in it I may see about doing a group buy on this thing. Let me know what you guys think.

I'm not to worried, it looks fairly simple...I just don't know exactly how to solder it. I can't download the instructions cause of this computer being a MAC.. But I have a picture of what its supposed to be so I can put everything in the right place at least.

You download them from the website along with the datalogger program. It's super easy.

I got one of these.... works great...
tuning info
Picture of mine assembled.
Just a couple tips... keep it well ventilated, the heatsink gets reaaaaally hot. I built a box for it with a fan, a lot better looking than a bare pcb sitting there.
At exactly 14.7 i found it jumped around a bit, when your running rich or lean it reads proper though, also the tach line is off by like 200rpm; not a big deal. You will figure it out when you start tuning.

Sweet dude. Good luck.
I grew up soldering electronics with my dad so this brings back memories.
Personal stickied.
If you DO decide to do a group buy, hit me up. My AFC-NEO has been pretty lonely in my closet

Silly question, but how do you get that fat connection on the 02 sensor to mate up with anything?
Offline

Joe

They suggest a couple ways... cutting and splicing... or making your own connector...
I just bought one from plxdevices.com
linky
It wasnt 45 bucks when i bought it though; it was only 25.
