I was gonna do the $4 wheel hop aid but hardcore metal on metal action frightens me a bit. So since I had a lot of UHMW kicking around the shop i decided to make washers out of that insted of using steel washers. UHMW is very durable and wear resistant plus it is somewhat self lubricating so i wouldn't expect any squeeks or creaks after installing.
I used 1/4" thick UHMW and cut (8) washers with a 1-3/4" hole saw to make a 1-1/2" disk. Then I used a 3/4" hole saw for the middle hole. This stuff is easy to work with, just messy.
I installed 1 above the cross member and 1 below at each bolt.
I was surprized of the improvement this mod made and now downshifting doesn't cause whiplash anymore. Cant wait to test it out fully next time at the track. Vibration is hardly any worse but I will be checking the bolts now and again because I'm not sure if the (self lubricating) feature will allow the bolts to back off over time.

looks pretty sweet. keep us updated with this as you drive on it more.

Congradulations, i dont know what UHMW is but i did the same thing with shore 94a urethane and i love it. Its a happy medium between hardcore metal on metal action and squishy shitty factory pencil eraser bushings. I hows the wheel hop reduction? i still have a tiny bit with mine maby 1% but considering i just have filled mounts and those bushings and no torque dampener i'm happy, how are the vibrations into the cabin.
Btw i have a how to, on the ones i did. Its not free but at least its not metal either.

UHMW is a very tough material, with the highest impact strength of any thermoplastic presently made. It is highly resistant to corrosive chemicals, with exception of oxidizing acids. It has extremely low moisture absorption, very low coefficient of friction, is self lubricating and is highly resistant to abrasion (15 times more resistant to abrasion than carbon steel). Its coefficient of friction is significantly lower than that of nylon and acetal, and is comparable to teflon, but UHMWPE has better abrasion resistance than teflon. It is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic.
I can vouch for the tasteless part. lol!
I can hardly notice any more cabin vibration but i do dissconnect my torque damper when i'm not racing and i've yet been able to test the wheel hop reduction.
We would get UHMW from a local industrial plastic supply company and it comes in sheets so any one that uses it will probably have small scraps laying around that u can grab for free. Or I guess I could just mail some out to people too.
I'll update any thing that comes up over the next few weeks.
BTW-All i had was white but it is availible in other colors as well, Black & white being the most common.

yea, i'd def be interested in a set of these if you come by enough for all the crossmember bolts. if you could cut them up and stuff i'd pay for your labor and shipping. i dont have a hole saw or anything

Hmm, I smell lucritive buisness venture...j/k
I'm gonna try punching them on my iron worker so i can pump them out in seconds plus it would make much cleaner cuts. If mine don't end up causing any issues I got no problem shipping them out. I'll search around for some black but white is all I got right now.

Well, I installed my cabin vibration meter over the weekend (my wife) and she did not notice anything untill I mentioned it. The official readings are as follows... "It's a little more bumpy at the red lights."
The increased vibration is nothing compared to installing the tourque dampner and the wheel hop is all but gone, I won't dare repeat what she said when I tested that out!
Anyways, I punched out 2 more sets (of 8) and wouldn't mind shipping them out (no cost) for some further research and feed back. The center hole in these 2 sets are a bit snug but will slip onto the bolt when you tighten them so any future ones will come with a bigger hole. Send p/m if interested.

its 8 per set, so one on top of the crossmember and 1 below it for each bolt right?

im interested, but i gotta check how much its gonna cost me to tap and rethread two crossmember bolts first so maybe ill pick up a set the next batch or if these are still available next week

Nice! Good looking out for the rest of us! After I installed the MMI's I don't' get any wheel hop at all so no need for these but a good way to save $40-50 for those who don't want to install the MMI's.

Fuck it, I'll try anything. My cross member hasnt been torqued yet after doing my mmi's and the washer thing, plust my crosmember is way low just sitting on my tanabe underbrace, so I'll give it a try. Send me PM

I'll try it out too. I already went through 2 torn MMI sets, and i'm tired of spending $40 on new ones. I sent you a pm.

K, all prototypes have been claimed now we'll wait and see how they work out.
BTW- I installed them one end at a time and did not need to unbolt motor mount from engine or anything, real easy intstall.

how are the vibrations with the AC on. I have solid polyurethane motor mounts, torque damper, bsr and I have metal washers in place of the rubber bushings that your UHMW ones replace. I the vibrations seem very minimal at idle, but when I turn on the AC, the car turns into a fucking back massaging machine!!!

Haven't tried with a/c on, I'll let ya know...would be nice to get a back massage after work though...

Metal washers are not too hardcore in the least. I didn't feel any more vibs after the $4 wheel hop aid.

I tried with a/c on and had no extra vibration at all. I also have mmi's and bsr but keep in mind I dissconnect my torque damper when I'm not racing.

it will really depend on what your idle is set at. if it's slightly higher, the vibrations will be less harsh.
props on getting something less ghetto than home depot washers going for this
one of the reasons i did the original mod with all the washers above the crossmember is to drop the engine down as low as possible for lower center of gravity.

Ahh, I never thought of that, I do have 3/8" and 1/2" thick UHMW plus I guess u could put both 1/4" washers above the cross member as well. When I was thinking of using the stack of steel washers I just imagined my fat fingers dropping them all over the floor so thats what started the idea of just using one piece of something thicker. If any one wants to try thicker washers let me know. I also have a CNC Highdef Plasma table so anyone dead set on using steel I could cut them out of anything up to 1" thick. Steel, Aluminum, or Stainless Steel-(if you're made of money-lol!)

*UPDATE*
Well it has finally rained up here so I decided to test out the wheel hop again. It was all fine untill I really got the tires spinning (1st gear around 5000rpm) then I got real violent wheel hop, it was nasty. I tried a few more times and got the same result but only around 5000rpm, it's fine below and stops just before redline. My factory motor mounts had small tears in them when I installed my inserts and my tranny is on its last legs so this might contribute to the bad hop in the wet. So I got 4 sample sets out in the mail so we can see what it does on other setups.

UPDATE!!!
I got these in the mail this morning and installed them right away. Fairly easy install. The back 2 crossmember bolts were the toughest. The only thing i had to do was expand the hole on the UHMW washers.
I took the car out for a little joy ride afterwards. Wow!!! What a difference. So much smoother downshifting and very little to no wheel hop. I did a couple launches as well. Not just the typical launches(2-3K). I did a few at 4-5K also where the wheel hop is bad! I am very impressed. The car feels much more smoother through all shifts. Also i havent really noticed any increase in vibrations.
I highly recommend these!
Also i will keep this thread updated with my future findings.

EDIT: And my mods are I/H/E/MMI/SS/Lowering Springs.

I PMd him about getting a set. I sell the steel washers at my work and I am going to try the steel, then these then a combo of both to see what happens. My hhypothesis is that the steel and UHMV washers will provide the greatest results, but I will see. I wish I could hook up some sensors to measure the forces associated with these set-ups but I dont so perception will have to do.

Looks like the demand is rising for these washers so I'm willing to send them out as long as people realize they are pretty much an un-tested product, I was just messing around in the garage when I came up with the idea, no engineering done whatsoever.
I do need to ask for $5 however to cover shipping/labor ect. but when I run out of UHMW I may have to ask for more to cover materials depending if I can get some scraps or not.
I am almost out of 1/4" thick material but I have a lot more 1/2" in which case I would just make 4 washers and they would go between crossmember and car which like gurov said lowers the center of gravity.
So PM me whith your address and your order... (8)-1/4" washers or (4)-1/2" washers
paypal me $5...rob_silvester@hotmail.com
and I'll send them right away.
P.S. Let me know if you want a custom order keeping in mind right now I only have 1/4" and 1/2" material.
Thanks, Rob

I forgot to mention this. I had the metal washers only on the front before this. I took it out for a drive after i replaced the metal washers with these. I felt a slight difference in the UHMW. Going from the metal to these, the vibrations are cut down a lot too.

No shit eh! lol
I came into work early today and did up a bunch of 1/2" washers I think these will be the way to go. I found a nice density of UHMW that punched real cleanly but it is still the ugly white color.
So if you want a set of (4) 1/2" washers just paypal me $5 (rob_silvester@hotmail.com). Be sure to include you address and spec-v user name so I can keep things orginized.
Just to let you know I will be gone next week so I will resume shipping on Monday the 18th.
P.S. Don't forget to give some feed back after you install them cause like I stated before these are pretty much untested and I am just ASSUMING that they will work with no issues.
