ignition coils

Ok peoples, Having a little problem. Searched for this info but to no avail. Anybody know what the resistance rating in ohms should be on a good coil pack. Trying to check and see if i have any going bad and I'd like something a little better than seeing if they spark or not. Been getting a random misfire code and just want to cover all the bases. Thanks in advance!!!

Re: ignition coils

Boogah. thought I posted again last night. Guess that was in my ZZZzzzz. Looked up pagesEC1660- EC1667 and it says that I need to check it with an oscillometer( forgive the spelling) The only time ohms are mentioned it says that they should be 1m or more. At work and dont have my fsm wit me sorry. I thought it was supposed to be within a certain range, at least it was on my maxima. the code I got was P0420 random missfire. Checked 4 vaccume leaks, replaced pcv valve, havent replaced the egr valve yet ($$$) It hasnt acted up again though. It would drop way down rpm, 3 to 4 hundred then die. Babied it home then stated checking things. Been fine since, only new thing i've done to the car - meagan header. Sorry for the book! lol:crazy:

Re: ignition coils

Check them the old fashion way.  With the car running and your car misfiring unplug and re-connect each plug in turn.  Find the one that isn't firing and switch the "dead" coil to a different cylinder.  That way you are tesing the plug-in's on the harness as well.  Worst case scenario, dead coil pack.  You should also use this as an excuse to replace the crank pos sensor as well, just to make sure.

Re: ignition coils

go pick up a spark tester from a parts store. basically it's a spark plug with a clamp to ground it. that way you can watch it spark and see if it is strong or weak, etc.

btw, resistance is not the best way to test any circuit, because you can only test it when it is disconnected, not working.

also, i see you have an 03, did you do the knock sensor relocation? that may help. you may not even have a real problem. from what i understand, the factory placement of the knock sensor is too sensitive.

hope this all helps

Re: ignition coils

Wow I'm really surprised nobody saw this but...

The code you said you're getting, P0420, is for catalyst efficiency below threshold. It's because you removed the catalyst when you installed the header...you just need a ghetto sim, that'll most likely make the code go away.

Random misfire would be P0300. So I don't think you have anything to worry about as far as misfires.

As far as your dropping idle...try a simple idle relearn procedure first. It's free and might help you out.

BTW, QR25DEs don't have an EGR valve, just in case a shop suggested you replace that.

Have you checked for new codes lately?
