How To: Install motor mount inserts

(write up and pictures courtesy of Nissan Performance Magazine)

1.  Jack up the car and secure it on jack stands. Get under the car and remove the three front bolts (pictured) and the three rear bolts (not pictured) to drop the cross-member.

http://heidi.f3h.com/esmmi/crossmember_bolts.jpg

2.  Now that you have dropped the cross member, line up the inserts along side the cross member as show below.

http://heidi.f3h.com/esmmi/motor_mount_inserts.jpg

3.  Proceed to place the front inserts in the stock mounts as shown below. It might be hard at first, so try wiggling them in until they fit all the way.

http://heidi.f3h.com/esmmi/front_rear_inserts.jpg

4.  Do the same procedure for the rear mounts and add two metal shims on each side of the inserts as shown below. Wrap the mount with painter's tape to prevent the shims from falling off during the install.

http://heidi.f3h.com/esmmi/inserts_shims.jpg

5.  Re-install the cross member the same way you un-installed it. Torque the bolts to FSM specifications.

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

Always wondered this... do those metal shims help keep the mmi's in place?  are they beneficial?  what size and where could I get these?

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

I didn't need those shimms, mine seem a lot wider on the rear.

I didn' have room for the shims. You may not as well.  Try it out first for some reason it seems that the '04+ didn't need them but the '03- did.

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

Like engine bogging.  If its your motor thats bogging it should be cause of the mounts.  However if you are feeling more vibrations, my think its bogging, thats normal.

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

one could possibly be ripped, i know that when you put them in you should expect alot more vibration, but it vibrates ALOT! and it makes my front dash shake and make noise, and when i get up to 3k or past and let off the gas, it makes like a popping noise, i think i might take them out, do you think one of the stock mm could be ripped? how would you go about repairing that?

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

Well if the stock is ripped then you can reomve the stock mount and sill it with polyurithane. That will in return render your ES MM useless. Crawl under there and take a visual to try and see if the ES's are ripped.

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

I had mmi before my catback and up around 3k I had a lot of engine resonation, but the only vibrations that I had was at idle or with the a/c on(well consider rough anyway)

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

well i finally installed mine and its great. it was a pain in the ass to get that rear bolt off the motor mount but once it was out it was a piece of cake. the car feels solid now nuttin but sweet sweet wheel spin. i bearly can tell the vibration only when its idleing. i definitely recommend this.smiley-smile

Can anyone tell me how they got their rear motor mount bolt off? Its offset so high, and my exhaust blocks me from getting at it.... What tools did you use? was the car lifted? Anything could help...

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

Just got my MMIs on 2 days ago, took me 2 hours only because it was such a pain to get the two bolts out that are through the front and rear motor mounts. Close quarters makes it next to impossible to get any torque on the wrench.

I've only tried to get wheel hop once since I had them on...it felt like it was going to wheel hop then it basically had no wheel hop at all, which was surely a pleasant suprise.

The only negative thing I've noticed is that I feel slightly more vibration in the pedals - That's about it, not really complaining, just trying to get used to it, its really barely noticable.  No rough idling for me!

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

So these inserts don't actually replace the rubber material inside the mounts, but just go inside of the stock rubber material and fill up the open area's in the stock rubber?

Why doesn't someone just make a solid polyurethane bushing that completely replaces the stock rubber?

because it possibly costs more and its harder to go back to stock if you wanted to

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

You also may want to try and put a jack under the motor and lift it slightly just to take some pressure off of the mounts. I had it all done in about 30 min. Oh and WD-40 helps alot too when you try and get them in....

Yo Liquid, if you wanna drive all the way up to Oxnard/Ventura area I'll do it. Just buy me some JAck-In-The-Box!  smiley-w00t

They were made at one point. I have some from Place Racing that I bought off another member here. Im not sure if they are still made.

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

Today, I jacked the car up, tried breaker bars to squeeze through and no luck. I'll try on Sunday and will take off the midpipe.

How can you get the pipe to unhook from the rubber mount easily? It took me forever to get it out when I installed my exhaust.

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

i wasn't sure if i would need metal shims or not.  i bought some.  but once i got under there it was very obvious that there is no room.  you just need to be prepared for either situation.

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

Today I decided to try to install the MMIs and succeeded. It took me 2 hours because I was having trouble bolting everything back up. Besides from the steps on the first post, I did take off the midpipe. I also jacked the engine up a little which also helped when lining the mounts back up. I also turned the wheel (or you can take off the driver's side tire) to get a view of where the bolt goes through in the rear motor mount when installing the mounts back in. I did have one other person helping me lift it back into place. I was able to take it off by myself.

My review: wheel hop is pretty much gone, there isn't a whole lot of vibration, good mod

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

I installed mine by my self which I do not suggest, would be a whole lot easier with 2 people. I did not have to remove the cat or use the shims and I have an 03. Overall its easy you just have to be patient and buff when the bolts. Took me about 1 1/2 hours. For the price its an excellent upgrade!

I dont see how having two people would benifit...i think it would hinder more than anything.

Re: How To: Install motor mount inserts

Also, i dont know if this was mentioned or not, but get some KY, Astro Glide, Vasoline, neosporne and rub the shit out of the mounts with it, it will make your life, a whole lot easier when putting them up into the slots again.
