Your Rice mod of the day.
supplies:
- neon you are putting in.
- a pair of wire strippers or knife will do
- a phillips screw driver(the star one)
- and electrical tape
- extra wire
1. Remove the coin holder tray down to the left of the steering wheel.
2. remove the lower dash to easier access the fuse box
3. -take any fuse out and insert a single wire(used as your power wire)
-u can just simply wrap the correct wiring around the correct wires.
4. now push the fuse back in with the wire sticking out.
5. loosen the single screw to the left of the fuse box and put another single wire inbetween the screw and the plastic backing(used as your ground wire)
6. gather up all the positive or power wires from your neons and put them all together with 1 extra wire sticking out of the bundle.(this wire is going to be going to the switch) so if u have 4 neons, u should have 4 positive wires + 1 extra wire that you are going to use to go to the switch
7. now do the same thing as about with all the ground wires exept now that you have the ground wires all together you are going to take that 1 wire which you attached to the screw and put it with the ground wires bundle.
8. take the wire which you attahced to the fuse and screw it into 1 side of the switch
9. take the other wire from the positive group and screw it into the other side of the switch.
10. put the switch into your coin holder or wherever you want and put the bottom of your dash back together.
11. turn on car and flip your new switch for the neons, if they turn on then ur done. if not, then haha i dont know what to tell you. try to find a loose connection.
PICTURES OF MY SET UP........
used a zip-tie. very secure
better pic of zip-tie and how i pointed the led's
new pic of only the center console lights(MUCH BRIGHTER)
old pic of how bright the led's were in the center console(really depends on how you position them
this is the led's wires comming from inside the center console.
here i just put all the ground/power wires together and put one wire comming out of each pack(1 wire from the ground group/1 wire from the power group)
here u can see where i put all the wires for the ground and power(you can use any fuse btw, i decided to use the 12v power socket infront of the shifter since i never use that anyways)
this is a pic of the underside of the vent left of the driver(i just drilled a hole in the bottom and threaded the wires for the led through it from the inside of the vent)
this is with the bottom pannel back on and the switch inside the coin box(havent made a little holder for the switch yet but i will)
EDIT** i actually mounted the switch on the bottom of the plastic piece under the steering wheel. you can mount wherever you want.
pic from standing outside the drivers door.

so the entire center console just comes out ?
How did you get the led's in the vents off to the far sides ?
Just curious, cause I havnt had a chance to tear the B15 apart yet ..B14 though ...i can tear apart, and put back together no problem, lol.
Thanks on this part.

nice write up
you may want to tape up those connectors, they have a way of vibrating off in car applications, I used a couple back in the day... then a fuse blew, connector was no where to be found

Nice! I like the pedals too.. what kind are they? Do they come in red? (I'm doing a red/black/silver interior theme)
PS: total astronomer geek thing.. but red lights are easier on your night vision..

yah the pedals are from canadian tire. i dont know if u have that in usa, prob not. i can always buy u some and ship them if u want. there something like 20$. i like them because they done squeek when wet like the stock ones. and they come in red, blue, silver and black i think.
as for the LED's to get them in the left and right vents u need to drill a small hole in the bottom of the vent to thread it in. big PITA just so u know. it took along time to get those ones in. as for the connectors, i actually took those off and use some correct wire connectors from home depot. basically for that exact reason, to prevent them from vibrating off.
any more questions let me know.

Ok cool, thanks for the tips guys.
Again, im new to the B15, so havnt had the chance to tear it down to learn the ins and outs, and its always nice to have some type of guide to begin with.
Just a thought, which Im probably gonna do, but for car show purposes ... I'm gonna add a blinker system to have them flash at different rates and so forth ... Just thought thatd be kinda cool.
So itd be possible to have them all glow constant, but then if your with friends and wanna show off, or at a show , you can flip a switch and they just blink, but at different times and what not.
Maybe add a multiple color led also ? Then itd be more diverse as to what color you can have and when ......

Ohh Question
will this same thing work will small neon tubes?
lets say for the underside of the dash pointing to the floor
Offline

Kyle

yah identical. i have those also, but they are in the same box that they are shipped in. Never used/installed them. They are suppose to be the same blue as the LED's.

I feel only a few things collectively makes a car "Rice"
doing alil something for show, isn't really Rice
but that is just a matter of opinion
still looks kinda cool though

Cool, saw someone on here that had Red Neon glowing on the underside of the dash, look pretty sick looking
and I acutally had a small blue neon tube, just playing around getting some ideas and that was one of them
I may have to try this out when I get the time
but yea to buff out the Rice factor, I'd like a upgrade geared for preformence before I go takin the dash out my car :XD!

nahh its not rice, its interior lighting, kinda cool for the youthful but i can see a 26+ y'o getting tired of it. did you buy any supplies in person? was the switch bought at radioshack?

Offline

Bryan

pepboys actually has a good selection of switches... and its a good write up... there are more ways to do this but that seems like one of the easiest GJ!

Kyle

bought the LED's off ebay, and the wire/switch at either home depot or radioshack.
instead of using the yellow twist on wire connectors you can use an actual wire connector which is safer. i saudered all the wires together and taped on the yellow screw on connectors so they dont fall off and spark anything.

I popped out the vent covers with a thin screwdriver (The part that moves arround). Attached the LCDS to the vent covers. Took a nail and pliers and torch. Heated the nail with the tourch while holding it with the plies and burned a small hole in the duct on both sides threaded the wire trough and connected them under the dash to the 9" LCD bar I already had installed. Popped back in the vent coves, left enough wire to be able to move the vents arround freely.

so basically its gonna be hard as shit for me to put them in passenger and driver side vents? haha..i put 2 each in the center console....1 question though is...didnt u guys use resistors so the 12v's dont blow up LED's? and even then im trying to figure out why mine arnt working...lol...the 2 on the left are, but not the 2 on the right...even though they both have power and ground....

Do you think there might be a way to put any colored LEDs in the center console where the knobs for the heaters are and stuff. I just dont like that orange glow...looks tcky....anyways, im looking for some directions if anyone knows how to do this...thanks!!!
