How To: Replace crankshaft position sensor

My CPS started crapping out on me when I was on my way back from Xmas vacation. Luckily I made it back home before it totally crapped out. It cost $37.23 (in stock) from the dealer. Anywhere else I would've had to special order it. Since I had to replace mine anyways I thought I should take some pictures for the DIYers. I know Nissan has a recall on this so this may come in handy for some people pretty soon. I personally don't like taking my car to a dealer if possible. This is the best possible way for me to change the CPS.

The process as a whole doesn't take long at all the way I did it. Maybe just over 30 mins just because it's 35* outside with 15mph wind gusts.

Tools Needed:

1/4 ratchet
10mm deep socket
12mm socket
flathead screwdriver
Stool/ block (for shorter people, yeah I used one, so what)

1) Disconnect Battery (not sure if it's necessary, doesn't hurt)

2) I took off my SRI just for easier access. Also, to get ready to stick my head/arm down there.

3) Take off the 12mm bolt that WAS holding the bracket pictured. With the bracket not secured to the block it was much easier to access the CPS.

4) Shove your arm down and take off the 10mm bolt holding the CPS in place.
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k100/saint0421/IMG_0278.jpg

5) remove old CPS
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k100/saint0421/IMG_0273.jpg

6) install new CPS and reinstall bolt
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k100/saint0421/IMG_0276.jpg
http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k100/saint0421/IMG_0278.jpg

7) Reinstall bolt for bracket

8) Reinstall intake (if removed)

9) Reconnect Battery (if disconnected)

10) Start it up and have fun driving again!!!

If anyone has any inputs, comments, or ways to improve on it then please share.

Re: How To: Replace crankshaft position sensor

I have an 02 and am currently trying to replace mine but it looks a little different. i have the wire disconnected but the assembly is stuck to the housing and won't come off. It will turn but not come out.  I cant really see down there to well so if anyone has any advice let me in on it.

Mine wouldn't come out smoothly either. I had to wiggle it to death to get it out.

Re: How To: Replace crankshaft position sensor

does the whole thing come out.  the part they gave me looks different than the one in the car because they said nissan was having problems with them and redisgned them.  i am afraid of jerking the damn thing out in fear of messing something up.

Re: How To: Replace crankshaft position sensor

My old one is different from my new one. I posted the pics of the old and new. The new one has a metal shank while the old one has a hard plastic shank. The whole thing does come out like pictured.

I was experiencing very hard starts about late December. I was on coming back from Xmas vacation. The car stalled/jerked while driving on the highway and threw a code. Pulled over, pulled the code with my scanner which I keep in my trunk. Hope and prayed that it didn't completely fail before the end of my trip.

Re: How To: Replace crankshaft position sensor

It would cut off in while driving then when it finally cut back on the ses light came on.  I put in my code reader and it came up code 335 which is cps malfunction.  I cleared the code and it would be fine for a while and do it again.  I read some stuff on here and determined it would be easier to replace it myself than let the dealership do it.

Re: How To: Replace crankshaft position sensor

Forgot to update.  I had to put the vss back in and try later cuz me and my girlfriend had to leave.  After knowing were it ACTUALLY was, it took me 10 min. and I could tell a little difference in the car besides it not randomly cutting off.  That slight sluggish felling has gone.  Thanx for the write up my Hanes book was really thin when it came to this.

Re: How To: Replace crankshaft position sensor

What about if the car feels like it's missing at low RPMs?  (Mainly in 1st and 2nd)
Does that mean it's going bad?

If you've thrown the code at one point or another then it's very likely to be going bad

Re: How To: Replace crankshaft position sensor

The book has been hard to find.  I frequent a lot of autoparts stores and have never seen one in person myself.  Strangly my girlfriends dad who also works on cars stumbled upon it some months back and got for me for christmas.  Needless to say, i about shit a brick.  Its for 95-04 all models and, there is not much specific how to's for the 02-04.  There is much more for the 95-01's.  Still it's a good thing to have so if you search the internet im sure you can find one somewhere.  Just be prepared for a lot of filling in the blanks.

Can you see the MMIs in the second picture? There's also the butterfly actuator (i dont know what the proper nomenclature is) at the top of the second picture. Try those as a point of reference. . .

Re: How To: Replace crankshaft position sensor

I had the same problem, thats why I spent an eternity on the wrong thing.  Look on the back side under the intake mani.  Its off the beaten path.  Look from the drivers side with a flashlight.  Also helps to move the intake tubing to see it.

Re: How To: Replace crankshaft position sensor

Thanks to ProZach for helping me find this thread!  I did this in 2 minutes from underneath the car.  Just stick your hand up between the downpie and the K member, and reach over towards the trans, follow the wireloom to the sensor.  It was kinda a pain in the a$$ to pull out, an I was scared of breaking it off, but once to twist it to break the seal, it wiggles right out. smiley-laugh

Re: How To: Replace crankshaft position sensor

crankshaft position sensor is for the crank, and it's located towards the bottom of the engine
camshaft sensor is for the cams, and it's located at the top of the engine on the driver's side of the head.

cam sensor is the black thing sticking out in this picture:

Is the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor the same part? I ordered the crankshaft position sensor but on the box it says camshaft. It seems to have fixed the problem but the SES light is still on. Could this be why it is still on? I used the diagnostic scanner to check if there are any other problems which there are not.

The how-to to erase/read codes doing the pedal dance:

I personally have an OBDII code reader/eraser. (Wal-Mart special)
