How To: Apex-i SAFC II set up instructions. With pictures!

Well, there are plenty of threads here about bits and pieces of the SAFC setup out there.

Shane, Josh and Myself were installing Shane's SAFC II and we decided to take pictures of the whole setup process. This had nothing to do with tuning at all. This is just to make everything easier for people.

Step 1.
After installing your SAFC II properly, put the car's ignition into the "ON" position. DO NOT TURN ON THE ENGINE!! Running with another cars tune, or settings may damage your car. You have been warned.

Step 2.
First you will need to initialize the unit. This is basically clearing out any old settings or tune, so you start with a clean slate.
At the main menu, go down and click on the "Etc." sub menu.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0080.jpg

Next scroll down to the "Initialize" option and click it.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0081.jpg

When the AFC asks if you want to "Init. All?" hit yes.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0082.jpg

Step 3.
Now, back at the main menu go into the "Etc." sub menu to set up the car.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0083.jpg

The first setting is sensor type. This is the MAF type and signal info.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0085.jpg

Our cars have a Hot Wire type MAF, select "Hot Wire".
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0086.jpg

Now, this has been in debate on the Sensor Numbers. Both 18 in 18 out and 24 in 24 out have worked. I used 18/18 on my car, and that is what we did with Shane's.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0087.jpg

Next is the sensor calibration. This is 1 in 1 out.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0089.jpg

Step 4.
Next setting is the Car Type. Back into the "Etc." Sub Menu select the "Car Type" option.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0090.jpg

Our cars are 4cyl and the throttle signal is the arrow going up.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0091.jpg

Step 5.
Back into the "Etc." sub menu select sensor check.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0094.jpg

This displays some of the signals.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0096.jpg

What you will need to do in the sensor check screen is put the car in 1st gear, then hold the throttle closed (foot all the off the pedal) for 10 seconds and then fully open (foot to the floor) for 10 seconds. You should see the volts go up. Like this.

Fully closed:
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0096.jpg
Fully Open:
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0097.jpg

Step 6.
Now you will need to calibrate your knock sensor.
So what you do is turn the ignition COMPLETELY off for 10 seconds. And now proceed to turn your car on (it's okay now).

Drive it around a bit, make sure the throttle is fine and your MAF isn't putting your car in limp mode. It's not right? Good. Check the RPMs are accurate at different RPMs as well.

After the car is warmed
Now you need to calibrate the knock sensor. Find a place where you can make some noise, cause you're going to revving the engine.

With the car still on, go into the "Settings" sub menu
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0113.jpg

And select the "Knk Set" Option.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0115.jpg

Now, what you need to do is rev the car up to the two RPMs. Lower one first and higher second. Take as much time as you need. It's tough keeping the RPMs at a single point. When you are STEADY at the right RPM, hit the button, that will set the knock at that RPM.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0118.jpg

Repeat for the next RPM.

And there you go!! Your car is all set up!!

Re: How To: Apex-i SAFC II set up instructions. With pictures!

Now once you have your SAFC II set up you want to view all the nice pretty data right?

Well there are multiple ways of displaying this data. And here they are.

At the main menu go into the "Monitor" sub menu.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0099.jpg

Select how many channels you want to view (I keep it at 4)
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0100.jpg

Next is selecting WHICH channels you want to see.
I watch RPM, Knock (Knk), Throttle and Correction.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0101.jpg

The first view is just the Numerical values of everything.http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0102.jpg

If you hit the next button, you will see it's now a graph.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0104.jpg

The 3rd view is only two gauges, so that's what you're stuck at.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0105.jpg

and the last view is a pretty way of showing all 4 values at once. Most people like this one.
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0106.jpg

AND HERE IS THE GOON AND HIS CAR WHO WE SET THIS ALL UP FOR!!!

Re: How To: Apex-i SAFC II set up instructions. With pictures!

keep in mind, if you look at :
http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r175/Dark-V/My%20Spec%20V/SAFC%202%20Instructions/DSC_0102.jpg

just like that, it will give you 0 indication your car has knocked.

from that view, hit the UP direction, numbers will invert in color, putting you into peak and hold mode. in this mode you can see the highest value of knock and other parameters (correction will still be displayed realtime, along with battery, i believe)

Don't worry G, I'm going to clear out my AFC and record my whole tuning process with my LC-1 and stuff. I need to retune anyway.

the Vtec controller can be used to open your secondaries whenever you want, but there hasn't been any real proof about gains at different RPMs.

Besides, a bunch of people that go boosted take them out all together.

vafc also allows for more point corrections...but Vtec feature can be used for shift light too if u want....or a bunch of other 12v activations

The VAFC will allow you to controll secondaries?  Is this the same manner as the SafcII where you wire it to a relay?  Or is this something better that is run through a pin out on the ECU?

----------------------------------EDITED-------------------------------

Nevermind the proceedure is the same for the SAFC in terms of how it is wired (only difference is the VTEC lead is used instead of the warning lead)  the advantage of the VAFC is the you can fool it into using 24 NE points.  Prolly more handy if your using some sort of FI.

Re: How To: Apex-i SAFC II set up instructions. With pictures!

I just installed mine today and im not sure if I have a freak SAFC or something but doing the "initialize" thing did not reset the corrections maps. I had to go through and zero out everything; im glad i checked it before i turned the car over. Great writeup BTW; had the laptop out at the car with me when i first turned it on.

That's probably because you didn't wait 10 secs after you shut the key off. I mean, select YES to initialize, then shut it off and wait 10 secs before you turn it on again.

That could have been it. Though I waited, oh well, its all set up and I zero'd the maps out and has been working great.... now just need to get my wideband installed.

I'd just like to say this was my second SAFC2 install I did. This went so much easier the second time. Mine came out just as good but took nearly double the time. I triple checked everything. Way to go on writeing this up Chris, it came out good.

Re: How To: Apex-i SAFC II set up instructions. With pictures!

I just did my sensor check and i got different readings.  This is what i got.

Foot off the Gas                                                  Foot On the Gas
In-1  1.015                                                          In-1   1.015 sometimes 1.020
In-2  0.030 sometimes 0.0325                               In-2   0.030
Thrt  0.675                                                          Thrt    4.055

Is there something wrong with my setup?

No, the throttle body won't be affected by that.

Re: How To: Apex-i SAFC II set up instructions. With pictures!

you can do whatever you want.  i have mine set at 20% and 50%.  just drive around and put the throttle to what you feel is a "low throttle" and take a peak at your safc to see what % throttle its at and then set it to that.  same for high.
